Good Morning
Feb 27th, 2010 by Lao

It’s not all U.S., Canada, you know? We’ve got some hometown games, ay?

Skinny. First it’s basketball, then it’s hockey. The Rams play their final bball of the year, early, at 10:30 am. Then at 2:00 ish, the Arctic Terns play hockey, exhibition style, Terns on Terns.

There you go. Good morning.

While Susitna Valley’s Crowley Classic commanded all of TALKEETNA famous’ attention this past weekend, there was far more happening in the Parks Highway sporting world. In fact, anyone who attended the Crowley Classic on Saturday, probably noticed that there were cross country ski races of considerable size unwinding on the same campus. The Matanuska-Susitna Bourough Ski Championships were held at Susitna Valley High School on Saturday, February 13th. Laura Wright produced a story for KTNA Talkeetna, which is worth a look and listen:

In addition, Laura Wright took the following photographs and passed them along.

Kimberly Del Frate,  Amanda Delfrate and Shannon Stough are pictured above. All ski for the Palmer High School team. Amanda Delfrate edged out her twin sister near the finish, with a time of 25:14.1 minutes.

Davis Dunlap of Palmer High School won the Boys’ race by two-thirds the length of his foot, or .4 seconds, if you prefer a more orthodox presentation of results. Side by side at the finish, but second to the line was Dunlap’s teammate Duney Strickland. Schyler Knopp of Colony High School finished just .5 seconds behind Strickland to take third. Laura Wright recommends an article on the Frontiersman website that has all of the results and the Boys’ photo finish. The link is below.

Thank you Laura for the photographs, information, and the story on KTNA. While ski obsessed at times, Laura has other hobbies, which include the production of a photo blog, Talking About Talkeetna. <-link

Hockey:

Elsewhere on the Parks Highway, at the Menard Memorial Ice Arena to be exact, the Greatland state high school hockey champion was crowned. Last week, TALKEETNA famous brought you some of the action and the final results from the Greatland Regional Qualifier. I would have loved to cover the Championships, but couldn’t bear the thought of missing the Crowley Classic. Thanks to Roben Shreeve, I was able to stay abreast of the action that was unfolding in Wasilla. Roben’s son Sterling Shreeve delivered a hat trick in Tri-Valley’s semi-final game against Delta Junction. Below are two links to the Anchorage Daily News’ coverage of the Greatland state hockey championships. If you read them in the order that they are presented, you can experience a little suspense as the semi-finals give way to the championship and third place games.

More Basketball:

On Saturday night, after the conclusion of the Crowley Classic, I happened to run into the Wasilla Lakes varsity boys basketball team on the way home from a tournament in Anderson. The Wasilla Lake Rams finished second in the tournament, losing to Kenny Lake in the final game.

The Wasilla Lake Rams have played twice in Susitna Valley this year, including the inaugural game in the new Susitna Valley High School gym. I learned many things as a high school basketball coach, one of which is that life on the road with high school athletes is a blast. The food can be less than exceptional, but the company is top notch. That said, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all high school coaches for their commitment and work. It is a labor of love, not prosperity.

The Wasilla Lake Rams play at home this Friday night against the Tri-Valley Viking Warriors. If the Susitna Valley Rams have the night off, I might just get on the road and bring you that game via TALKEETNA famous. I’m a fan of both teams. No matter what may happen, TALKEETNA famous will cover the Wasilla Lake Rams and the Tri-Valley Viking Warriors at least two more times, as both teams will be competing in the Central Interior regional tournament, all of which will be covered by TALKEETNA famous. That regional tournment runs from March 3rd through March 6th, and will be held at Tri-Valley High School in Healy.

Cheers to the Anderson team and school for keeping the basketball program going through a period of limited participation, and congratulations to their team for the honor bestowed. Thank you, again, to Uwe Hoffmann for taking the time to email the above information, and for taking a sports rag called TALKEETNA famous seriously.

Where to begin?
Feb 8th, 2010 by Lao

The Parks Highway was home to so much high quality amateur athletics, that I don’t know where to start a recap. How about hockey.

The Greatland Conference held its Regional Qualifier this weekend. Four teams qualified for State. Hutchinson had already qualified by virtue of its flawless regular season performance, but six schools were in action looking to join the Hutchison squad next weekend. The high seeds reigned at the Qualifier. Delta Junction snuck by Kenny Lake with a 3-2 victory. Tri-Valley bested Susitna Valley with an 8-0 win. Or was it 9-0? Convincing regardless of the final score. In the final game, Monroe Catholic topped the Tok squad with an 8-0 outcome. Despite the score, I would like to congratulate the Tok team, particularly the goaltender, for their effort. With the game already decided, the Tok team clearly played the final minutes with every ounce of their energy in homage to their parents and supporters. Inspiring. Cheers to all the athletes and families.

Kaz Cismowski, the Regions’ MVP is on the far left. On his left shoulder is Dakota MacIver, the goaltender that delivered yet another shutout in the Qualifier. Please notice Susitna Valley’s All Conference Team member, Corey Ambrose, in the center. Good luck to all the qualifying teams, and congratulations to the players pictured above for their accomplishments.

Hockey Regional Qualifier

The Susitna Valley Rams and the Tri-Valley Viking Warriors played their regional qualifier this evening. It’s win and your in. State, that is. The winner of this game qualifies for next week’s State Championship games. Tri-Valley is the second seed in the Greatland Conference. Susitna Valley is the seventh seed. The teams are familiar with each other as the teams played each other twice last weekend. In the day’s first game, Delta Junction qualified for State with a 3-2 win over Kenny Lake. Check out play by play coverage of the game below.

Coach Jack McDonald is preparing the Susitna Valley Rams hockey team for their upcoming regional qualifier. The good news is that the Rams need just one win to qualify for the State Tournament. The bad news is that they must get through the Tri-Valley Viking Warriors to achieve that goal. The game is tomorrow evening at 5:15 pm at The Dipper in Fairbanks, Alaska. Coach McDonald thinks the team is ready. TALKEETNA famous will cover the game. It will be available on a short delay, with each period uploaded immediately upon the conclusion of the period.

Change of Direction

Jens Timmers changes directions. So too does TALKEETNA famous. Thus far, TKA famous has been sport specific, and for me, enjoyably so. However, TKA famous will now begin to cover other aspects of life in and around Talkeetna and the Susitna Valley. Please keep coming back for the sports, but take a look at what else is going on about town, or as I like to say, on campus.

That said, tomorrow it is more basketball as Nikolaevsk brings a girls and boys team to Susitna Valley high school to play two games beginning at 6 pm. I believe TKA famous will be able to upload the games immediately upon the conclusion of each.

Susitna Valley vs. Tri-Valley (Saturday morning hockey)
Jan 30th, 2010 by Lao

Fresh off of Friday night’s match-up, the Susitna Valley Rams and the Tri-Valley Viking Warriors paired up for the second of two on Tri-Valley’s home ice. This was the final regular season game of the year for both teams. For Tri-Valley’s seniors, it was the last chance to play on their home ice in their high school careers. Everyone was greeted by a brilliant morning, and the ice and at times the goaltenders’ eyes were bathed in sunlight. Press play below to listen to play by play of the game.

Susitna Valley vs. Tri-Valley (hockey)
Jan 29th, 2010 by Lao

The Susitna Valley Rams hockey team travelled to Healy on Friday to play the Tri-Valley Viking Warriors. With a 10-2 record entering tonight’s game, Tri-Valley is in second place in the Greatland Conference. The Rams entered the game with a 5-9 record. It was senior night in Tri-Valley. This is the final weekend of home games for the Viking Warriors, so the four seniors on the squad and their families were honored before the game. Susitna Valley was without the services of their starting goaltender, Forest Morgan, and Zaak Casagranda, both of whom were eligible to play after serving short disciplinary suspensions. Asked by coach Jack Mcdonald if the two players should be allowed to play, the team voted to play this weekend without Morgan and Casagranda. Both will be allowed to join the team for regionals next weekend. Listen to play by play coverage by pressing play below. The teams play again Saturday morning at 10 am.
